{Review} Paul Mitchell Color Care Range

At the beginning of the month I received my very first Test Box (you can read more about that here),
and I was super excited to try the products that were in the June Box. As mentioned in my previous post, I wanted to be able to test out the products before I wrote a full review. So after a couple weeks trial, here's what I thought about the Paul Mitchell Color Care Range.

I trialled all the products together, then individually so I could pin point certain things.

Disclaimer: As always I'm going to be brutally honest

So let's get right into this. I have been colouring my hair since I was probably 14 (I have cool parents like that) so it's fair to say I know my way around "colour care products". I've heard some great things about Paul Mitchell and wanted to badly to experience said great things, but boy was I disappointed with this shampoo. A lot of colour caring products have this idea that as long as they can protect your hair colour it doesn't really matter the outcome of the wash. First thing I wasn't happy about was the smell, I'm the kind of girl who when my hair swishes in the wind I want it to smell amazing...not like old hay. But alas, I pushed on! So I squirted a squirt from the squirty top bottle and began to work the product into my hair. Or so I thought I did. Turns out, my regular sized squirt wasn't enough to work up a lather, so I applied more....and then even more. Finally once a lather decided to join the party and I had used a quarter of the 100ml bottle, I began the cleaning. Now if I'm going to wash my long mane, I want it to at least feel clean...it didn't. Once out of the shower I towel dried my hair as I normally would and then left my hair to air dry. My hair dried in clumps, like actual clumps of hair that stuck together. The product seems to contain an ingredient that reacts as a film over your hair (guessing this is the color protection layer), but the problem is with my fine hair it clumped bits together. My hair also decided to dry super frizzy. Upon trying the shampoo on it's own with my other products, same findings.
Safe to say, I am not a fan of this shampoo.

Now onto the conditioner. Unfortunately the conditioner seems to carry the same "hay like" smell as the shampoo, it most likely has something to do with the White Ginger, Sunflower and Rosemary extracts that are out into the product. However, aside from the smell, I actually enjoyed this conditioner. My hair was smooth and softer after applying and working in the product. When used without the shampoo, it left my hair feeling healthier and the frizziness wasn't there. I wouldn't go as far as saying that this product left me feeling like I had stronger hair, but it wasn't all round that bad.

The Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray was the product I was most impressed with out of the three. I am all for "aftercare" treatments for my hair. Although this does smell like the previous two products, it's not as strong and dissipates after about an hour. I can't say if it protected my hair from UV rays or if it helped retain my colour, but it did leave my hair looking healthy and shiny. The 100ml bottle will also last a lot longer as your spraying only a few pumps into your hair.

My overall opinion on these products is that they are ok, I personally couldn't measure if they helped keep my colour at the same level as when I first dyed my hair. I think the best way to test that would be on someone who has recently died their hair either a pink, purple or minty colour and you can gauge how long the fade would take. I unfortunately don't have a majestic mane of rainbow colours so I can't give a definitive answer to this.
Would I repurchase these products? For my hair no, maybe for someone with thicker hair they may work better, but for my fine hair I wouldn't personally repurchase these products.

I'd love to hear if you have used these and what you thought about them, so let me know!

Until next time...

    1. I'm loving the Colour Locking Spray still, it's amazing! I'd also love to steal your hair, but that would be considered weird :P
